This is one of the shortest walks for a family outing: around 20 minutes from the entrance brings you to ses Fonts Ufanes where, with a little luck, you can witness one of Mallorca’s most remarkable natural phenomena. The springs lie on the publicly owned Gabellí Petit estate in Campanet and have been protected as a Natural Monument since 2001.
Why do the Fonts Ufanes springs flow?
These springs do not flow continuously. Rain falling on the Puig Tomir massif and the surrounding area seeps through the limestone and collects underground. After sustained heavy rain, the aquifer fills and water finds its way to the surface among the rocks in the holm oak woodland. This is why the springs do not always have water, and a single rainy day does not guarantee they will flow.
The two main springs are called Ufana Grossa and Ufana Petita. When the flow is abundant, water can also emerge around tree trunks and at other points across the woodland. The discharge can rise from zero to around 3,000 litres per second within minutes. The water then follows the Torrent de Teló to the Torrent de Sant Miquel, eventually reaching s’Albufera de Mallorca.
A circular walk through the holm oak woodland
The walk is still worthwhile when the springs are dry. The route described here reaches the springs in around 20 minutes, then returns by the other branch to make a circular walk. At the first junction, you can choose either way: the left-hand branch is slightly steeper, while the right-hand one has a gentler gradient. Both lead into the woodland.
Most of the walk follows a dirt track with small stones, taking you into the beautiful woodland that surrounds the springs. Allow 40 minutes to an hour of walking, plus as long as you want to spend watching the water. The full official route is around 2.9 kilometres long.
An ideal introduction to nature walks for young children, even when the springs are dry.
A pushchair can manage much of the track when it is dry, although the stones make a baby carrier more comfortable. When the springs flow, water can cover sections of the route: in those conditions, we would not count on completing the whole circuit with a pushchair. Wear water-resistant footwear and follow the estate staff’s instructions.
Getting there and parking
From Palma, take the Ma-13 towards sa Pobla and leave at exit 37, following signs for the Campanet caves and the Sant Miquel chapel. The entrance to Gabellí Petit is a few metres from the chapel; visitors enter the estate on foot.
Parking is usually the main difficulty: the estate has no car park of its own. When the springs are flowing, visitor numbers can be very high and special one-way traffic arrangements or parking areas may be introduced. Arriving around opening time helps avoid the busiest hours, but does not guarantee a space. Park only where permitted, without blocking entrances.
The Coves de Campanet are nearby, so you can combine both visits. If you plan to use their car park, ask the venue about its conditions; it is not a public car park for ses Fonts Ufanes.
