Mallorca offers plenty of alternatives to conventional holiday accommodation, from mountain huts and hostels to monastery guesthouses, sanctuaries and other budget places to stay.
These options vary considerably, but they have something in common: they let us discover a different side of the island and, in many cases, stay close to nature and within easy reach of walking trails.
This is a guide we have taken particular care of over the years. Information about mountain refuges can change frequently, so we regularly review opening arrangements, bookings, facilities and conditions. Our aim is to give you a clear, up-to-date overview of the options before you plan your stay.
We have stayed at many of them ourselves. Their main appeal is the welcoming atmosphere, which makes them a good choice for trips with other families. Some serve home-cooked food, and many are excellent starting points for walks.
You do not always need to stay overnight, either. At some refuges, you can book a meal and combine your visit with a walk nearby.
IBANAT mountain refuges in Mallorca

The refuges managed by IBANAT, the Balearic Institute of Nature, offer the chance to stay in natural surroundings and explore some of Mallorca’s most interesting landscapes.
The network includes two main categories: basic mountain refuges and refuges with additional facilities, offering beds, bathrooms, showers and cooking facilities, depending on the property. Check each listing carefully, as facilities vary considerably.

Refuges managed by the Consell de Mallorca

Alongside the IBANAT refuges, there is another network managed by the Consell de Mallorca, the island council. Many form part of the GR 221 Dry Stone Route, known locally as the Ruta de Pedra en Sec. They offer a way to explore the Serra de Tramuntana and stay overnight in the mountains. Some are also easier to reach, making them practical options for families.
You will find links to official information and the booking system at the end of this section.

Coma d’en Vidal refuge
Coma d’en Vidal refuge is one of the more recent additions to the GR 221 Dry Stone Route. It is in the municipality of Estellencs, at an altitude of 545 metres, between the Pinotells hills and the Puig des Castellet ridge.
Its location provides access to the public estates of Son Fortuny, Galatzó and Coma d’en Vidal, an area rich in natural and traditional rural heritage that is still recovering from a major forest fire.
Marked walking routes lead towards Boal de ses Serveres and Pas des Cossi. More demanding options include the ascent of Puig de Galatzó, at 1,027 metres, and Mola de s’Esclop, at 926 metres.
The refuge accommodates 24 people in three shared dormitories sleeping 12, 8 and 4. It has a dining room, toilets, showers, a fireplace and a grill. No meals are provided, so bring your own food.
The refuge can only be reached on foot. The most direct approach starts near the entrance to the Son Fortuny public estate, at kilometre 97.1 of the Ma-10 road between Andratx and Estellencs. From there, the uphill walk takes approximately 55 minutes, with 253 metres of ascent. The Consell warns that finding parking at this starting point can be difficult.

The refuge currently operates on an unstaffed, self-catering basis, with no meal or bar service.

The GR 221 Dry Stone Route
The GR 221 explores the dry stone landscapes of the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape. Along the way, you can discover historic sites and learn about the area’s traditions, architecture, food and crafts.
The route currently has 244.2 km of marked trails: 138.6 km on the main itinerary and 105.6 km on alternative routes. The refuges provide overnight accommodation for walkers planning a multi-day journey.
Future refuge openings in Mallorca
Mallorca’s refuge network continues to develop. One planned addition is the Raixa refuge in Bunyola, expected to provide around 50 places in the former estate manager’s house. The project also includes a training space for margers, the craftspeople who build and repair traditional dry stone walls.

Castell d’Alaró guesthouse
The Castell d’Alaró guesthouse is one of Mallorca’s more unusual places to stay. It stands on top of Puig d’Alaró, at approximately 821 metres above sea level, beside the Mare de Déu del Refugi chapel and the remains of the castle.
Staying here means spending the night in a historic setting with wide views over the Serra de Tramuntana and the Pla de Mallorca. The guesthouse can also serve as a base for walks towards Orient and other routes through the surrounding mountains.
The accommodation sleeps 30 people in six dormitories: one sleeping 10 and five sleeping 4. Facilities include a dining room, a lounge with a fireplace, toilets, electricity, hot water, heating, blankets and a telephone.
There is a bar, and lunch and dinner are available. Overnight guests must bring a sleeping bag or sheets. Check accommodation and meal prices directly with the guesthouse.
How to reach the guesthouse
You cannot drive all the way to Castell d’Alaró: the final section must be walked. A common starting point is Es Verger restaurant, where there are parking areas and the uphill path to the castle begins. Our Castell d’Alaró walking guide explains this approach in more detail.
You can also approach on foot along the GR 221 alternative route connecting the Orient area with Tossals Verds refuge.
The guesthouse entered a new phase in June 2026 following a change of operator. Refugi des Castell d’Alaró, S.L. took over management on 1 June, with plans for improvements to the facilities.

Staying at Mallorca’s sanctuaries and religious guesthouses

Cura sanctuary, on Puig de Randa, has changed considerably from the simple, inexpensive guesthouse we knew years ago. The accommodation now operates more like a hotel, with renovated rooms, different room categories, a restaurant and additional services.
Although its setting and views still make it a special place to stay, we would no longer include it as a budget accommodation option.
You can visit the sanctuary without staying at the hotel. There is a large free car park, a small recreation area and views towards the mountains and the Bay of Palma.

About Sa Capelleta de Sóller
Sa Capelleta de s’Olivar is a Modernist chapel built in 1917 at the initiative of the priest Pere-Lluc Ripoll, who wanted to honour Our Lady of Lourdes by recreating the grotto associated with her apparitions. Set among old olive groves in the Serra de Tramuntana, it has an organic façade of irregular stone and an interior resembling a natural cave with stalactites, reflecting the influence of Gaudí. Although the chapel is closed, you can glimpse the interior through small windows. A neighbouring religious building formerly housed Augustinian nuns.
The grounds remain open to visitors free of charge, offering a peaceful stop with views across the Sóller valley.
Santuari de Sant Salvador (Felanitx)
Sant Salvador sanctuary, on Puig de Sant Salvador, has also changed considerably from the simple guesthouse we knew years ago. It now operates as Petit Hotel Hostatgeria Sant Salvador, with an offer and services closer to those of a hotel.
Although its setting and views remain a reason to stay, we would no longer describe it as a budget accommodation option. Some guests comment that the rooms remain simple despite the higher prices.
You can also visit without staying overnight. There is a large free car park, panoramic views in every direction and several monuments to explore.
- Website: Petit Hotel Hostatgeria Sant Salvador.
