Capdepera Castle looks out over the town from the top of Puig de Capdepera in north-east Mallorca. In 1300, Jaume II planned a walled settlement here to protect people living in the surrounding area. The walls were built during the 14th century. An older structure still stands at the highest point of the enclosure, the Miquel Nunis tower, which dates to the Islamic period.
The castle is a protected historic site. Inside you can see the remains of old houses, the church of Mare de Déu de l’Esperança and the Governor’s House, home to the Museu de la Llata. It shows how palm leaves were plaited to make baskets, hats and other everyday objects. We’d take time to walk the open sections of the walls and look out from the church terrace. From up there you can see the town, the coast and the channel between Mallorca and Menorca. Ticket revenue helps preserve the municipality’s heritage.

In May, Capdepera hosts one of Mallorca’s most colourful fairs, the Mercat Medieval de Capdepera. Banners hang from the houses in the old town, and the streets fill with craft and food stalls, music and activities for children. The castle provides the backdrop and hosts some of the events.
The market commemorates the founding of the walled settlement under Jaume II. Capdepera Town Council publishes the programme for each edition, with details of events and access to the castle during the fair.
Another castle worth visiting with children is Bellver Castle in Palma.
